Aims of NSS
In 2002 the Irish government saw effective spatial planning as a good way to promote the balanced development of Ireland for the future. The National Spatial Strategy was born. We are now in the third phase of the strategy.
The word ‘spatial’ simply describes the space around us. The spaces
- where our houses are built
- where our workplaces are located
- that we call rural and urban
- taken up by roads and infrastructure
Spatial planning simply means planning for the future of these spaces. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have a shop, a basketball court, a restaurant, a school, a football field, a swimming pool or any other amenity only a short walk away from where you live?
It would make more sense for the economy, the environment, and society.
